Dermal denticles cover the skin of sharks for protection and may have additional functions, depending on the environment. The aim of the present study was to analyze the morphological pattern of dermal denticles across the body of the poorly known deep-water catshark Galeus mincaronei, which is endemic to Southern Brazil. Additionally, we aimed to identify differences between sexes and stages of sexual maturity. For this purpose, we analyzed patches of eight skin samples from body regions, that is, the head, body, and tail. Dermal denticles were imaged using scanning electron microscopy. Measurements of crown morphological variations (length and width) and density of dermal denticles were performed. Nine characters of dermal denticle morphology were selected to describe a morphological pattern using principal component analysis (PCA). The first PCA axis explained 45.2% of the variation, the second explained 33%, and the third explained 14.3%, together explaining 92.5% of the total variation in denticle morphology. We identified three groups of dermal denticle crown morphologies and their possible functions. The first was composed of nostril and snout denticles, which might suggest abrasion strength functions; the second was composed of most body denticles, such as those in the cranium, on the left side of the body, and on the pectoral, dorsal, and caudal fins, which might be related to generalized functions; and the third was composed of only caudal crest denticles, which might indicate defense functions with hydrodynamic properties in G. mincaronei. Likewise, our results reveal variations in dermal denticle morphology and arrangement along the three maturity stages considered in both sexes. Similarly, sexual dimorphism in the crown width and morphology of dermal denticles was observed in developing and mature individuals. Our results are the first to reveal the morphological variation of dermal denticles in relation to function, sex, and ontogeny of individual G. mincaronei.

The Rasptail skate Rostroraja velezi is commercially exploited in artisanal elasmobranch fisheries along the west coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, but information on its life history is limited. This study aimed to investigate the reproductive biology of R. velezi. A total of 105 specimens were caught from April 2008 to May 2012, including the largest reported specimen with 121 cm total length, 96 cm disc width (DW ). Females attained larger sizes than males. Males and females presented functional gonads. There was an asymmetry in the testes of males, with the left testis being larger. Histological analysis of the reproductive biology of R. velezi was performed here for the first time. The presence of sperm storage in females and spermatogenic development beginning at the first stages of maturity in males was recorded. It was possible to identify the development of secretions in the club, baffle and terminal zone of the oviducal gland. DW at maturity, defined as the DW at which 50% of the population is mature, was estimated at 68-72 cm for females and 65.1 cm for males. Egg-bearing females caught in April and May presented one egg capsule per uterus. Furthermore, a description of the egg capsule of R. velezi is provided. Elucidating the reproductive cycle, the type of reproductive strategies, and the fecundity of R. velezi will allow us to understand the impact of fisheries on this species.

This work analyzed length-mass relationship, growth in length, mass variations and dynamic of yolk sac depletion of Mustelus schmitti embryos, extracted from females catched by the artisanal fishery acting off La Paloma (34°39'S, 54°10'W, Uruguay) during 2006 and 2007. Differences in total length and total mass between sexes were not significant. Embryos showed a negative allometric growth for both years with a slope change near the day 170 of the year, likely to be associated with the depletion of the external yolk sac. Gompertz and Von Bertalanffy curves were adjusted for each year. Parturition date was determined around the day 300 of the year. Yolk depletion followed a logistic dynamic Yt=1/(1+e(-13.749 + 0.072*t)) for 2006 and Yt=1/(1+e(-10.472 + 0.054*t)) for 2007. Embryos showed a mean increase in total dry mass of 5.4g in 187 days which, together with yolk depletion dynamics, indicates additional energetic supply, suggesting that M. schmitti presents limited histotrophy.


Este trabajo analizó las relaciones largo-masa, crecimiento en talla, variaciones en masa y dinámica de consumo del saco vitelino de embriones de Mustelus schmitti extraídos de hembras capturadas por la flota pesquera artesanal del puerto de La Paloma (34°39'S, 54°10'W, Uruguay) durante 2006 y 2007. Las diferencias en largo total y masa total entre sexos no fueron significativas. Los embriones mostraron crecimiento alométrico negativo en ambos años, con un cambio de pendiente cercano al día 170, probablemente asociado con el agotamiento del saco vitelino externo. Se ajustaron curvas de crecimiento de Gompertz y VonBertalanffy para cada año. La fecha de parición se determinó cerca del día 300 del año. El consumo de vitelo siguió una dinámica logística Yt=1/(1+e(-13.749 + 0.072*t)) en 2006 y Yt=1/(1+e(-10.472 + 0.054*t)) en 2007. Los embriones mostraron un aumento promedio de masa seca de 5.4g en 187 días, esto, junto con la dinámica de consumo de vitelo, indicó una provisión adicional de energía, sugiriendo que M. schmitti presenta histotrofía limitada.

The present study analyzed the sexual development, sizes at maturity and morphometric relationships for both sexes of Sympterygia acuta and S. bonapartii, endemic of south-western Atlantic Ocean. The examined specimens were obtained through research cruises and commercial fishing trips, during 2011 and 2012, along the southern Brazilian coast, in latitudes ranging from 34°28'S to 31°29'S and at depths between 15 and 142 m. Significant differences (p<0.05) in S. bonapartii and in S acuta between sexes for the relationships total length (cm) - disc width (cm) and total length - total/eviscerated weight (g) respectively, demonstrated sexual dimorphism during the development in both species. The estimated size at maturity for males and females, respectively, were 46.1 and 44.7 cm, for S. acuta, and 58.4 and 59.9 cm, for S. bonapartii. A decrease in size at maturity for both sexes was observed in S. acuta and females of S. bonapartii of the southern coast of Brazil, respect to previous studies carried out over the last 30 years.


O presente estudo analisou o desenvolvimento sexual, os tamanhos de maturidade e as relações morfométricas para ambos os sexos das espécies Sympterygia acuta e S. bonapartii endêmica do sudoeste do Oceano Atlântico. Os indivíduos foram coletados em cruzeiros de investigação e viagens de pesca comercial durante 2011 e 2012 ao longo da costa do Sul do Brasil em latitudes que variam de 34°28'S a 31° 29'S, e em profundidades entre 15 e 142 m. Houve diferenças significativas entre sexos para S. bonapartii (p <0,05) e S acuta nas relações comprimento total (cm) - largura do disco (cm) e comprimento - peso total e comprimento total - peso eviscerado (g), demonstrando dimorfismo sexual durante o desenvolvimento em ambas as espécies.Os tamanhos estimados de maturação para machos e fêmeas, respectivamente, foram iguais a 46,1 e 44,7 cm para S. acuta; e 58,4 e 59,9 cm para S. bonapartii. Uma diminuição nos tamanhos de maturidade para ambos os sexos foi observada em S. acuta e fêmeas de S. bonapartii da costa Sul do Brasil, com relação a estudos realizados há 30 anos.

Freshwater stingrays, or potamotrygonids, are restricted to Neotropical river drainages. These elasmobranchs are well adapted to freshwater environments and the number of described species gradually increases as further research is carried out. Some of the first studies on their systematics and natural history were carried out in the 1960s and 1970s in southern South America. However, there is no new published data on potamotrygonids from Uruguayan waters since then (except for local journal reports from sportive fishermen and specimens deposited in Uruguayan collections). The present study aims to record the recent occurrence of two species of potamotrygonids caught by sport fishermen, with comments on other published historical records for the same area. As many other elasmobranchs, these species have an important, but not always well understood, role in the Uruguayan rivers ecosystems.


As raias de água doce ou potamotrigonídeos estão restritas às drenagens dos rios Neotropicais. Estas raias tem se adaptado bem aos ambientes de água doce e o número de espécies descritas aumenta gradualmente conforme as pesquisas na área se intensificam. Alguns dos primeiros estudos sobre a sistemática e a historia natural deste grupo foram realizados nas décadas de 1960 e 1970 na região Sul de América do Sul. Porém, há poucos dados publicados sobre potamotrigonídeos em águas uruguaias desde então (com exceção de registros de pescadores esportivos publicados em jornais locais, e espécimes depositados em coleções uruguaias). O presente estudo, portanto, tem como objetivo registrar a ocorrência de duas espécies de potamotrigonídeos no Uruguai capturados por pescadores esportivos assim como realizar uma compilação de ocorrências anteriores presentes na literatura. Como muitos outros elasmobrânquios, estas espécies possuem um papel importante nos ecossistemas dos rios uruguaios, embora não completamente compreendido.

RESUMO

A estrutura microscópica da cápsula ovífera de Atlantoraja cyclophora, endêmica na região sul-americana do Atlântico, é apresentada neste artigo. Em seção transversal, a face dorsal da cápsula ovígera tem uma largura de 70m, e está subdividida em quatro camadas. Ventralmente, a parede da cápsula ovígera tem uma largura de 60m e é conformada por três camadas. Ambas as faces acham-se cobertas por protuberâncias, que fazem com que a superfície da cápsula seja estriada ao olho nu.
